Major and corporal killed, accident

A major and a corporal were killed while four others were injured in an accident at Oddusuddan in Mullaitivu this afternoon, the Army said.
Police said the army jeep, in which the army personnel were travelling in, skidded off the road near the 29th mile post and crashed into a tree at around 1.30 p.m.
The injured were admitted to the Vavuniya Hospital and the corporal and the major were pronounced dead on admission to the hospital.
Army Spokesman Brigadier Sumith Atapattu said the victims, who were attached to the Army Headquarters, were on their way to Vavuniya on an administrative duty when their vehicle met with the accident

Two shot dead in underworld clash


Two people were shot dead in Hekitta, Wattala a short while ago.
The two victims aged 28 and 33 years have been identified as residents of Jinthupitiya, Kotahena.
The Police Media Unit noted the victims had been shot when traveling in a vehicle. However, another woman who was in the vehicle at the time of the incident had only sustained injuries.
The police suspect the shooting to be the result of a clash between two criminal gangs. Police also suspect that the shooting was carried out by members of the “Kelaniya Gumma” gang.
The vehicle used by the suspects was seen fleeing towards Negombo.
